Recently came across this 1997 D. The reverse has 3 embedded imperfections on the reverse. The largest of which is photographed. The area around the imperfection rises slightly then drops off and rises again at the site of the embedded object.

It's an interesting phenomenon that isn't consistent with any PMD I've ever seen.

Note the wave on the fields. That is an indicator that this happened post strike.

If it were a struck through, then the wave would not be present. While this is a light hit to the coin, the opposite side will probably not show a push out on that side of the coin.

Note on this coin the push outwards on the opposite side, from the punch damage on the obverse. You coin was hit lightly, so you probably won't see the push out on the obverse.

CoopHome: Wave on a coin? What is that? movement from a post strike hit on a coin. this shows that it happened post strike where the hit altered coins field area around the contact mark. often this will also the opposite side of the coin on the other side with a push outwards coin event.

I'll say it is possibly a bad plating issue, Maybe the zinc planchet was not cleaned good enough and the copper plating could not adhere well enough

@ Dearborn - Yes, does seem the planchete may have contributed to the issue, as a result the plating got "sticky" and did not adhere. What strikes me is the unusual shape of the imperfection. Maybe an excessively high or low surface temperature of the die or planchete may have also contributed to the imperfection. Just spitballing with the temps.
