I came across this 1989 D Lincoln Cent with an unusual looking FG, are there 2 different reverse design varieties for this date/mint? Thanks in advance :) Edited by 2foxy 02/15/2023 02:12 am

normal it is RDV-006 as per VV denomination. What you show it is more RDV-005 from previous year. For me is normal that the Mint use some old design dies in order to achieve the production. the FG do not really tell you the design variety. They are much more variables.

What looks like a doubled FG is either MD or DDD,if that is what you are referring to. John1

The shape of the G is much more elongated and thinner, and the top of the G is tilted to the left. The FG itself also seems to be further from the wall of the building. I wonder what kind of strike issue might have caused this.

Quote: What you show it is more RDV-005 from previous year. Silviosi, are you saying that there may be many 89s that have essentially the 88 FG (RDV-005)? I know that people look for 88s that have RDV-006 (what is supposed to be the 89 version). Are you saying that the opposite is fairly common? (89s that have the 88 version)?

I believe OP's coin was struck with a very worn reverse die, so worn that the FG is distorted and nearly erased from the die.
There are no known 1989 cents with the reverse from 1988, and I don't believe this is one.

The dies were breaking down, thus they had to dip into the new design earlier. So there will not be any RDV-005's on the RDV-006 era. What you have is a polished die on the RDV-006 reverse. Note the locations will be normal for that design. Possible Machine Doubling or contact on the coin. The AME will be normal on this design: The AME on your coin will the the Flat AME, not the Rounded AME.

Coop is right, the reverse lettering on my coin is flatter and wider consistent with the RDV-006. I wonder how many other 1989 D pennies were struck with this overpolished die that distorted the FG in this way. Its pretty cool looking.

Thank you :) So I should hold on to it? I'm hoping someone else finds one similar to it.
