Look at the rim and should of Lincoln. It is dirt and lighting issue.

Light Machine Doubling on the right side of the 'Y'. If that is what you are seeing, you are looking at the wrong areas for the devices for a doubled die. The doubled dies are seen on the centers of the designs.
1982-D-Large-Date-Cent-Is-Liberty-Doubled
The large dates have the larger devices. Thus when you see the example above, note the spread differences on the DDO. (Which is a Philly mint, but all the dies were make in Philly at that time)

I suggest you go back and learn the minting process so that when you come across a true error it will become obvious. As is, you're learning backwards.

@PRISB: To be able to understand more and mentally visualize how it is or how happened, I suggest you if you has the time and the occasion to visit Denver Mint which I think is closer to you. They has visits and has two different: the production line and the productions of the Dies. This will clarify much from the confusions.
