I see what you mean with this one. Definitely dipped, which is a shame. F-15 Details - Cleaned

Just shy of VF-20. F-15 straight grade.

appears to be a weak strike on both sides especially the reverse. the flatness of the higher devices with surrounding sharp details definitely point to that. its hard to say how a TPG would see this and I'm always on the fence which way to go.

for me there is just to much detail on the coin including a rounded cheek for an F coin. if I ignore the strike I have it at VF35 taking off for strike i'd net it VF20 and maybe 25

i can see why you are all over the place on this one. I looked at a couple hundred slabbed 1905's and could not find one with a strike like this.

Coming back to this one. I am at VF-20 looking at it again. I still think something is not quite right with the patina, making me think an old dip.

I have a bunch of these and last couple years have gotten the knack buying original low and mid grade Barber's but may certainly be wrong on this one. Coin being dipped never entered my mind but it may well have been? Yes I certainly saw VF-30 weak strike on this at LCS and at 60 bucks snapped it up!
Got home and saw those flat: laurels, arrows, wings, flat tail feathers and ahhhh darn it just a nice Fine. Couple days later I'm seeing original luster in pockets of wings and luster hidden in reverse lettering, those big fat smooth checks and I'm back to VF-30 LOL.
It's going into ANACS at the end of month and will update the post. My thoughts are maybe this thing likely will snatch a VF grade?
Never held a weak striking 1905 S in my hand its a neat coin.
Will try and get some extra pics, still learning PIXLR so stand by.

That is real interesting if there are small pockets of luster there. I assumed what I saw in the photos was just an odd light reflection.

Real curious to see what ANACS has to say about this one!

Here are a couple VF20 for comparison. I don't think it's weak strike, that's just how they wear. I'm thinking F15 but you might squeak into VF20.

Here's a VF25 also showing a very flat eagle head.
