mostly due to die deteriroration, perhaps some grease stuck to the die as well

agree with nick10 above. But that wouldn't stop someone from trying to sell a "blind Jefferson error" on the bay for 5 bucks.

robbudo; Someone can sell this coin for 5 dollars if one wants to just be honest and not use the word error. Say what you honestly think it is and do not sell for more than what it is worth. Just know most collectors would say the value is probably 50 cents if that.
