U.S. copper lovers here convinced me to acquire my own 1816 Mint set. This one is the most common variety of this peculiar issuance as the Nation emerged from the War of 1812. Thoughts? Thanks!

The stars at 9-10 are flat, but that's probably the strike. I'm guessing MS-63 RB.

Very nice.... I agree with the MS63 but I think BN.
Also agree with strike instead of wear.

Enough small dings to keep it at
MS-63, somewhere between BN and RB.

Quite exceptional that this example retains most of it's mint luster under the patina.

Obverse die at the rim from K1-K3 appears to have crumbled. Otherwise, all other parts of the obverse and reverse die appear sharp and perfect. I think this is an EDS impression with strike weakness in the right side of the coin as evidenced by the flat stars particularly stars 2-4 as Wideglide points out. Odd that s/he seems to count the stars counter-clockwise from right to left. Wreath is beautifully detailed as are all the letters and date. LIBERTY in the coronet headdress seems sharply struck and beautifully rendered.

Noyes state B/A? no Cud yet btw. S11/S12, no or very fine rev crack at tops of ST and OF, crumbling at S7-S10, into field at S9-S10

Much nicer than any of my 1816s, nicer than the Twin Leaf one I saw at CVM's table a few years ago

Several N-2s with the same obverse crumbling rim in upper right quadrant and weakness in the stars at left.

This one identified as N-2 with Noyes Die State B/B seems to have the crumbling rim but sharply struck stars throughout the left side. Weakness is in stars 12-13.

Yours might be the rev B state but I don't see the cracks; if there is a thin crack above ST and OF then it's the B; the crack develops all the way and goes through 1st A in AM then out to rim in state C rev

Thanks paralyse. Looking at that reverse in the subject coin, that die state looks flawless to me. Starting with the dentils/rim to the wreath to everything else in the reverse.

Other reverse die state B coins like the B/B coin linked above, has the die state B reverse but there is no sign of any cracks where you indicate in the reverse.

Yup, I still think yours is the B/A.

The example I used for comparison and the one with which I am more familiar (ex: Twin Leaf, Grellman/McCawley, AU58 CAC green bean) was attributed by Mr. Grellman as the B state rev, the cracks are VERY faintly visible just to the left of O. Bill Noyes did not distinguish it himself in his book but it would be logical that reverse B can probably be split into "early B" and "later B" states.

I think my "best" 1816 is probably EAC VG8 or thereabouts, it's always a treat to behold such a beautiful example as yours.

I'd say it's mint state, MS61/62BN but a TPG would probably grade it higher.

Hi westcoin. Wondering why in a 0-10 uncirculated scale you would say it rates 1-2. Is this really bottom of the barrel in terms of unc cents? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
