I'm almost ready to chalk this one up as unidentifiable but I've had luck in the past with the experts on here and I've been extremely grateful. Any ideas on this one? It's imperfectly round but I measure 23mm.

The writing is Arabic, so the classification is, very broadly, "Islamic". The style of writing is modern, so it's not mediaeval. I can't really read much of what's going on with this coin in terms of year or mint-name, but I can see a very distinctive pattern of decorative "dots" which has me leaning towards Iran, or perhaps Mughal India.

Islamic has been the consensus from other people's input. I truly appreciate your expert affirmation. As I stated, I'm content with not getting an exact identification. However, it's a complex site for which it was found and knowing it was an Islamic coin adds to the complexity of this site...given the context with the other identifiable coins and relics. This forum is wonderful!

Is the coin thick or thin? And were you metal detecting? Nice to know what area you live in it could pin down maybe what type of coin it is I found a few variances to it.
I'd say that was a nice fine sadly it's so worn on the one side and partially on the other. I'd still keep it as a keeper as they say, nice find

Safavid Iran, likely Sultan Husayn, 1694-1722. The side that is more legible has the Shiite kalima: "There is no god but Allah alone. Muhammad is the prophet of Allah. 'Ali is the friend of Allah." The margin (barely visible) should contain the names of the 12 Shiite Imams.

The ruler's name, mint and date would have been on the mostly blank side. A trace of the date is visible at the bottom edge. The denomination would be determined by weight.
