Hey folks

PCGS vs. NGC

Each grading company has their strengths and weaknesses for grading a series.

I was curious as to who historically has been known to be better/most consistent with grading high grade Eisenhower dollars?

Does anyone here have first hand knowledge or experience with this?

Thanks

Coins of gem quality are scarce. Many of the uncirculated sets have been poured over by specialists so if you have some of those PCGS appears to be the best avenue for return values based on this Charles Morgan article you Ike fans may like. Otherwise the mint produced more than 640 million Ikes during the coin's short production run of 1971-1978. While many, if not most, circulated to some degree, modern circulated coins are not that collectible and probably never will be. The same can be said for large stockpiles in dealer's inventories of low MS grade Ikes, the majority of which would grade out at MS-63 or MS-64 if submitted to PCGS or NGC. So I dont see much other differences mentioned other than top grade values.

Thanks for the article!

These Coins are special, not run of the mill by any means I assure you.

I'm hoping for high gem grades.

Yup, good read. I have a small mountain of Ikes from the Bicentennial squirreled away in capsules--all pulled directly from uncirculated mint sets. Some have a rather warm tone. Will need to pay more attention to where they stand on the grading scale. A few are pretty decent.

Excellent, hopefully both of you will get those gem grades when/if you decide to submit. I had saved that article as it really shows just what a difference grade makes for that series (and used the Red Book as example between their MS63 pricing and what PCGS and NGC pricing is for a rarer gem MS65. Collectors who use the Red Book as their point of reference would never know this and probably never even consider grading or looking for these examples.

I have mentioned before that it reminds me slightly of 1971-s ike uncirculated and proof dollar as mentioned in nov 21 numismatist. uncirculated were bagged in bulk and shipped to ny for packaging causing lower quality. proof did not have this issue. P+D circulated also had poor quality. To me, this is also an opportunity for those of you who now know this to cherrypick these higher potential grade examples if possible out there once you get a bit more comfortable with what a gem looks like vs a typical ms63-64 range for that series.

One would think I was an expert on this since I have a complete set in PCGS. I also have two NGC Ikes that I acquired when I started building the "high grade set" before settling on PCGS. However, my purchases were based on eye appeal and affordability. In retrospect, the grades are just a number.

Good luck with the grading! I look forward to the results now matter which TPG you choose.

NumismaticsFTW - and of course Jbuck has posted his Eisenhower dollars linked in his signature for those that havent seen them which look great...

...got some nice gems in there as well which as mentioned in the article is not easy to find, so hopefully yours will come out as gems also submitting to PCGS.

I normally prefer to recommend NGC for beginners and until you either have many coins with known value that will be returned by grading and selling (to cover the higher initial yearly membership fee) or start to regularly be able to submit coins in which case those added fees start to make more sense. PCGS seems to be the go to once you start to deal with the higher end coins for resale (and gems in this case).
