Perhaps it is time to call in Mike Diamond here In the meantime I'm going to wait and see if the OP will post an 'almost' edge on image.

Looks like striped toning from long term storage against some kind of material—the lines don't look raised to me. I can't see this as roller lines or a strike through fabric.

Thanks for all the replies, let me try to answer/update on the questions above:
I have not tried acetone yet (don't have any and a little scared to do it as I'm a rookie); I'm taking it to a dealer this weekend who has XRF capability and should get weight and SI from him (had to look meaning of that stuff up); I believe the silver lines are raised, I'll try to get a side view pic up soon;
I think that's all outstanding questions, pls let know if not.
Question for Silviosi: which "L" are you looking at? All the "L"'s I see are the same.
Again, thanks.

Looks like tape was place on the surface on both sides.(who knows why) for a long time. When removed the glue etched into the metal just like a finger print can permanently etch into a Lincoln Cent. IMHO

On the 1909 cent it looks more like finger print issues on that coin. But on a struck through cloth the devices were altered because of the struck through cloth issue: Just one side would be affected: On the OP's coin it look like rolling lines on the coin as both sides are showing the same thing. They are on the planchet before the strike: Note the off center area?

thanks for the new images, they are fine - getting an oblique image and have it all in focus in next to impossible, but these will work.

Willburton, thanks for your opinion. I suspect your are correct about it's value, but I really appreciate how you can articulate that opinion. It was much more intelligent that all the other replies combined.
While I am a newbie to this forum, I am not a newbie to forums in general. The purpose of forums includes interest in a subject and knowledge transfer. This is what is occurring here. The other people that replied gave their opinions and reasons for them. Many disagreed but so what, that's part of the fun.
I'll give an update after I hear back from the coin dealer.

Went to coin dealer. Weight is .39 ozT He had no explanation other than maybe someone ran a scraper tool over it. ? Went to another dealer and he thought a cloth may have been laid on it for a while. Didn't have an answer as to why the lines going into the corners of the letters and figures were so fitted. Have sent photos to another source for analysis. Not anything yet that you have not mentioned. I'll wait to see if this other group has any thoughts, then it's pretty much a dead end.
Thanks

Get some acetone and soak that coin! That should have been your first step.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Coop, others: Yes, waiting for these last people to look at it. If nothing new, then I would agree with you. Hondo: Yes, well, I'm a rookie. A couple of others said the same thing. It's on my hardware store list.
thanks

Well, this is what a company said "Thanks for sharing information on your coin. It does not appear to be a struck-through variety. Unfortunately, we would not be able to make any appraisals or offers on them before they have been third party authenticated by one of the three major coin grading services."
So I'll probably dip it in acetone, see if that adds any clarity, maybe post a last pic and store it for "whatever".

a quick dip and a 24 hour bath did nothing to appearance. Well, end of story. A sincere thanks to all that have commented....
