I have to admit: I am not a fan of coin holders. Because of this, I also admit that I am very poor in knowing how to detect fake holders. The upside is that an unholdered suspect coin can be much more easily be investigated.

I have to admit, I am disappointed in the amount of information provided in the article.

Does Mike Marshall write a column or otherwise demonstrate to us how to identify these fakes?

Mike gives seminars and coin show presentations, many hands-on. Search other coin site's archives, as well as here, and you'll get your fill of all the markers and clues.

I agree that the article is rather thin. Do the cert numbers check out? Etc. But slabbed or not, who in their right mind would buy a 1921 50c or 1936 1c Dot without thorough research? I'd have trouble feeling sorry for them.

I believe CCN was not intending this to be an article but rather a FYI segment. The cert numbers do check out for date and denomination. This list was compiled with info right from the manufacturer in China. Go figure. Anyone looking for denominational markers and photos only need to ask here. Currently there are 3 differing generations of the Chinese fakes however the markers are still accurate today. MM

So I'm thinking that bulk discount I got on the 50 1936 Dot Cents might have been a Red Flag.

From what I've seen, you can order most any coin or coin denomination, with your choice of date(s), from a certain Chinese dealer or dealers. The offer is made to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, school/class reunions, or 100/200 years prior to any event. They are not advertised as "fakes" or counterfeits, just items for legitimate consumption. Some even USED be stamped as "copies". If you ever get a chance, attend one of Mike's seminars ... they are enlightening and educational.
