OK, how does the penny get marks like this on both sides? It doesn't appear that the rim of the penny got damaged. I'm stumped. :)

This is what we call a 'woody'. The marks looks like the grain of wood.

Basically it is a poor mix of the alloys of copper and Tin or Zinc that make up the cent
