I know it's a stupid question, but I'm new to this community and looking into my collection thinking most aren't worth anything, but I'm trying to avoid an embarrassing trip to a coin dealer if in deed I have just average coins. I collect mostly odd coins, but I've started collecting coins that a crisp in the details and some appear, now I'm not an expert, have minimal to no wear. Also, older pennies, do they have to be bright and shiny to have a premium, or do they just have to be close to flawless. I know the grading system has sub categories of RD, RB, and BN after the coin grade number and I've researched a lot but I figured this is one of the best places to get some good opinions before posting my coins.

I'd recommend that you get a good catalog like the Red Book which lists the value of US coins. Condition is very important, but so is rarity: an 80-year-old coin with a mintage figure in the hundreds of millions will probably be of little value even in EF and AU, but a coin with a mintage of a few hundred thousand may have substantial value even in Good or VG.

Agree with NumisRob. Also, super shiny coins don't always carry high values, are not necessarily rare. Looking forward to seeing a few pics--full, large and sharp photos of the obverse and reverse.

Thank you all so much. I'll post some in new threads. Most are 1956 to present. Not expecting to be a millionaire due to high mint production, hope you guys enjoy new threads and thank you John1 for the link.

Its getting harder to find older coins especially in regular pocket change these days but older coins by itself doesn't mean valuable in many cases unless they are in top condition such as when they came right out of a mint set, mint bag or roll and put away they might be worth more, or they have some special variety or error in general. This is because millions were minted in some cases. On the other hand there are certainly dates with low mintages that have value even when not in great condition, and the above mentioned varieties and errors exist you can look for.

You can start with free sites as John1 mentioned like http://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm
or for graded values (after you pay fees) to see if anything jumps out as valuable when you look a coin up: https://www.PCGS.com/prices

or you can use a book like the Red Book for general info https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Book-U...p/079484961X or strike it rich with pocket change 5th edition for varieties and errors to look for https://www.amazon.com/Strike-Rich-.../0593328604/

You may find this site useful for a bit of general info on the coins and grades, but less for values https://www.coinstudy.com/

The RD, RB, BN are colors they can assign when graded and are in mint state, not pocket change circulated conditions http://goccf.com/t/440777#3796840

Perfect, you guys are super helpful. I have learned the RD is for red, the RB is red brown, and the BN is brown, and MS starts at 60 and the next step down is AU59.

you are correct in that if you are collector filling holes in an album most have minimal value if anything. if I starting collecting today I would start with all the keys and semi-keys of the series first and buy the best example I could afford as they will continue to increase in value over time. there are very few modern coins that have much value. there are a some and you can check your series at http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml

most moderns to have much value need to be at least MS67 and to find one in circulation is almost impossible. its easier to hit the lottery. you state the most are 56 or later. unless its a rarer variety they probably are not more than face value.

you dont really need to go to a dealer. I suggest looking through numismedia in your series to see which coins have any decent value then post photos (one per thread, both sides) here to get an assessment. use the following to take photos from a phone. it should give you the best possible shot.

1. remove coin from holder if possible
2. turn off flash
3. place coin on flat surface with indirect natural light. maybe a window sill in a cloudy day. Use a black or white background to avoid any reflective color
4. move phone about 3in from coin
5. zoom in using your fingers until the coin comes into focus and fills the camera. if your phone has a portrait selection use that and then press and hold on the coin in the view finder to AF lock it
6. hold phone steady. if you cant then place something on either side of the coin (like books) at that distance and lay phone between them. this will hold it steady and allow you to zoom and take the photo without any blurring

for US coins 1933 is the turning point, ones dated before then often have at least a small premium regardless of condition simply because most were minted in smaller quantities compared to coins after 1933

new coins, even the current year, can carry a premium if they are in exceptionally high grade, such as MS67 or higher, but you are unlikely to encounter coins in that high a grade even within a fresh bag or roll directly from the mint

I've got over 14000 pics of my collection, and no I'm not going to flood this community with that many pics lol. The only thing with posting on here is the pics can only be up to 300kbs and most of my pics are between 2 to 5 Mbs due to my high resolution camera. I've posted a couple so far and I'll keep going through my gallery to so you the best ones I've got. I also have error coins and some just plain odd but I post those in the error coin group of threads.

I recommend investing in a good hastings triplet 8 or 10x loupe.
