Hello,

I have not handled this coin, but a local shop in Rome has it. Anything concern to anyone would be appreciated!

I have not dealt with one these before.

@john... I do not know yet. I got the picture by WhatsApp message. Usually gold in Rome is spot + 5-8%.

@john... Does the coin look alright to you? I've seen a counterfeit $5 gold piece in Rome ... but I have not handled a $10 piece.

Surfaces look a little too good to be true.

I can't say if it is genuine or not.

as soon as I saw these photos something did not look right with the surfaces. its either a counterfeit or the over dipped and the original surfaces have been removed. one area that bothers me are the inset stripes on the shield. everything on the rev is sharp except those. strange

I'm not a gold expert but I would be suspect of this one.

I'm definitely no expert, but this doesn't look right. Gold is a soft metal, and the fields don't have as much as a nick on them. Yet her face looks like it has beard stubble... Strange.

I agree with the sentiment that this is not a legit coin. For some reason, and the reason I asked, is something subtly told me something was wrong. I have not dealt with this coin shop before, so I will go see it in person. The hair and hair bead details look off. I also posted a 1932 $10 gold indian on another thread.

I think the coin could be genuine, just whizzed.

Does the '9' look tooled or worked to anyone? I know the low curl of the 9 has a tight loop, almost joining it back to the full number; but this example looks 'off'. Or maybe I am just looking for detail defects.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record this morning. Although a few dings and scratches are showing but, if that's a raw gold coin I would expect more due to the soft metal of gold and it's age.

I don't want to say one way or the other but, I suspect counterfeit from the photos.

Again, weights and measurements? Can't really stress that enough especially with gold.

If you have doubts, I would leave it alone. For me it's a clear pass.

Although it's a 5 Dollar and not a 10, here's a real one for example.

Unable to grade from these photos, too much lighting.

@dsking, I have bought a few gold coins before and always weigh and measure. The coin weighs 3/10th of a gram below. The Indian weighs right. I would also check diameter in person. Something about the relief on this coin doesn't look right; I am trying to figure that out.

Whizzed? Maybe - Italians love to polish coins.

IGE, I may go see this coin this week or next and get some better photos. What do you think about authenticity?

I think that re-visiting the coin in person is your best bet! I don't doubt that you check the measurements...just wanted to make sure. Too many folks on here to remember who is as knowledgeable as others!

I so want to come up with a "funny" about Italians but, I can't think of any. Except yes, maybe they don't have as many quirks about polishing and cleaning as us finicky Americans do!
