Hello all, trying to identify this 1972 S as A proof. Why, because it looks better than A business strike. But I am unsure unless this is a SMS (unknown) or a really good business strike. Help and regards!

The wide and bold obverse rim is appealing to think proof strike - then the rest of your obverse photos alas show a harsh cleaning.

Reverse photo is almost a slam dunk business strike.

Are you able to show a single non-glare image of both sides - the entire coin in each image?

Lacking that I'm going business strike.

I'm going with what nickelsearcher said. Accept for the cleaning. I think it went through a coin machine or usage/circulated a few times do to the scratches.

It's a keeper to me none the less, I'd hold on to it. But that's me.

Bit of a puzzle... The reverse does look business strike, the obverse looks like an impaired proof. New pics using diffused lighting might help.

all those semi-parallel scratches says rough cleaning to me.
The rim at the top says proof, but at the bottom - business strike. I think it is not a proof

By the strike I will say Business Strike. Probably come from an Uncirculated set.

The field should be a lot smoother if it were a Proof. I would say it's a regular business strike or a very poor proof, which I seriously doubt.

Question, wasn't in 72 that the pennies were all made poorly. It was a bad year for the pennies wasn't it? Therefore it would be difficult to grade the coin.
Why I say this just this other day I was looking up a 71-P and they talked about the 72's. I hope I'm not mistaken here in recalling the 1972 were all poorly made. What made them valuable was the double die I think on 72-D that was fetching a good price other than that they were poorly made.

Thank you for your comments, and after the majority agrees with a business strike I think they are right. The reverse did not look like a proof! Regards to all replies.

The Strike is stronger on the Proof cents, because they are struck twice.

The glare from the images might be weakening your images?
