Found this in a roll just now. An excellent DDO that would be far more famous if it weren't for the monster that is die 1 for this date. For whatever reason this die has always been one of my favorites of the series. 1955 Lincoln Wheat cent doubled die - DDO-002, FS-102       |

Absolutely the most amazing example that I've seen. This particular example could lend credence to it being a tripled die. Big Congrats TB !

Thanks folks! Yes it is a dandy die state on a dandy doubled die (today is brought to you by the letter D). As for tripling, I don't think that is what is showing on the Liberty, but I will take a closer look. The 1955 dies had a pretty funky-looking LIBERTY to start with, and I think that effect is just magnified here. But certainly worth noting and looking into further, as some other things are a bit odd like the extra tall tips on the right two bars of the W in WE.
The coin certainly isn't graded, as I just pulled it out of a roll last night, but I would expect it to drop in around MS64RB. A few years ago I hit a couple of these in a roll in a much later die state which went MS65RD and one MS66RD. So I still have the 66 which is POP 4/0 at this point, but never really was happy with the die state. This one won't grade as high, but such a lovely die state that it's gotta go in to PCGS.

Roll find... It can happen. Went though a bank roll of all AU58+ or better '55 p wheats last year--nice coins, but no DDO. Nice! |

Thanks! Hunting 1955 BU rolls can be productive, but now those rolls are getting pretty expensive to just poke through a bunch of mostly late die stage coins. But if you end up with enough of such rolls, there are a number of common and rare things to find so usually something comes out of them. Loads of BIE coins, some Cuds, doubled dies are fairly common along with errors like tapered planchets or clipped planchets. And there there are the three possible big finds, die 1, die 2 or the shattered die. Nice when one of those hits, although pretty doubtful there are any die 1 coins left in any BU rolls. As for camera gear it's pretty simple. I use a Canon S95 point and shoot for the full coin pics, just setting the coin on a post it note with a light above and behind it. The close up shots are done with an AmScope trinocular scope, but I don't like to fuss with the onboard camera and usually just snap a pic through the optics with my iphone. Rotation, cropping and image resizing are done in Photoshop. Edited by tropicalbats
