I found this 1973 S Lincoln Cent silver in color with moderate circulation damage, it does not appear to be plated. These are supposed to be 95% copper and 5% zinc right? Perhaps the alloy for this coin was mixed with a higher percentage of zinc?

Taken from the web (copied and pasted just to answer)...maybe some one else will have a different answer. Really intelligent experts and collectors on here

No, there's no 1973 penny created in silver. If you find a 1973/4 penny made out of a silvery material then it is either an aluminum penny, and therefore illegal to own or sell, or it is a standard copper penny that has been coated in a silver-toned metal. To find out which type you have simply weigh the coin.
the coin weighs under a gram then it is an aluminum penny and must be surrendered to the government. If the coin weighs 3.11 grams or over then it is a copper coin coated in a metal alloy and can be legally sold, bought, or traded.

It weighs 3.03 grams. If it is plated, it would have to be heavily so because the scuffs on it are relatively deep in some places.

This it is plated coin and no more then this. The Flu-Flu of aluminum is not. A cent in aluminum will be 1.9 to 2.3 gr.

No question on this one, it has the look of a heavily plated coin. The devices are kind of blurred from the plating.

Agreed - this coin has been plated. It's now a novelty item.

I found a few interesting articles about the '73/'74 Aluminum cents. Although the mint asked for those to be returned, the courts have gone back and forth regarding legal, private ownership to this day. The cent does appear "plated" but, it may be worth it to investigate further. In 2014 one of the 1974 D's was graded by PCGS.

Whether SF actually minted any of these, I have not found any information which further strengthens our "plated" responses.
