My method is likely the least used here, but I use PhotoShop. I have it and know it for my caving and bat research expeditions as I am usually the team still photographer. So rather than learn something easier, I just stick with what I know. Only takes a second to bring up the resize box and click in the numbers I like for posting pics here and when you hit "save as" it will tell you the size of the file before you save, with a slider that allows you to bring it down to below the 300K max for this site by adjusting the .jpg compression instead of having to fuss with actually resizing the image itself again.

For fast I use PhotoScape X PRO. The home version work also very well and is free.

When I resize a coin to 72dpi and 12 inches on the long side after cropping it, the size is usually around 400K. Just moving the slider from 10 to 8 generally will bring it below 300K without any noticeable change in quality. This is the pop up window after you click Save As and then type in the new filename.  |

to the CCF @shark I follow pretty much the same Photoshop process as @bats except I start with initial cropped image re-size to 800x800dpi and keep the resolution at 72dpi. You don't need higher resolution for most viewing on most computer monitors. Then it's a simple matter of adjusting the jpg compression to obtain a file size below the CCF limit of 300Kb.
