The first is the 2006 Subscription coin. This years theme is the Pillar Dollar, a spanish coin which was one of Australia's proclamation coins.

All three coins are brilliant. I like the silver one with the ship the most.
And Bigfella, I've got a question; In the explanation of the 5$ UNC Duyfken coin it says "... this wonderful Al/Br coin has been produced." Al/Br meaning aluminium bronze? or the coin is Aluminium Bromine compound? I guess Br stands for bronze? since Bromine is not even a metal:)

Shatsi.....subcription issues are when the Mint starts off with no preset mintage of that issue. Collectors are required to order the coin(s) from the Mint by a predetermined date. All orders received by that close off date then becomes the mintage of that issue.
RenaL.....you are right in saying Al/Br is Aluminium Bronze.

The Royal Australian Mint issues one Subscription Coin a year. They started this in 1996 and the issue price at that time was $45. The issue price now is $88. The highest mintage was 21,791 in 1997. The lowest mintage was 11,845 for 2005.
In 2004 the subscription coin was the 40th Anniversary of the Last Penny. This was a bi-metal coin that had a silver outer ring and a copper inner ring, only the mint put a varnish looking substance into the copper to give it an aged look. This made many collectors cringe.
I mention this as the subscription coins are normally a Proof Silver coin and this one (2006 Pillar Dollar) looks like they have given it the artificially aged look.
Bigfella, can you find out from the RAM if this is indeed the case with this one?

The information direct from the mint is 99.9% silver with an antique finish. Normally they describe the finish as proof or unc so now we have a new category of coin!!!

i like the pillar dollar the best. And the antique effect looks better on silver than on bronze.

This is not the first time the Mints have issued a coin with this sort of a finish....PM's 2003 Evolution of the Alphabet had this "artificial finish".
