Backstory: I'm 68 and in the 60's, my dad and I collected coins and put them in the Whitman folders. Duplicates were put in paper coin rolls. At some point in the 70's, our basement (split level home with half the house in the "basement") flooded and I think the coins were submerged. We dried them but then just put them all into paper coin rolls.

I've decided to buy Littleton Albums for them. These albums have those clear plastic slides on both sides of the coin. I'm currently working on Roosevelt dimes. Upon opening the paper rolls, the majority of the dimes have black spots, there's some toning, the edges on many are black but it's almost all on the obverse. The reverse seems to be OK.

I've read a few posts about chemicals in the adhesive of paper coin rolls as well as the old cheap folders, etc.

I think my coins are a victim of that. But..... some of these dimes are in really good, maybe fine condition if you only look at the reverse. I'm heartbroken.

I have a few questions I hope folks can answer.

If I have a choice between a partially blackened, really good condition dime or a clean worn dime, which one would be better to put in the album? Will the "problem" with the blackened coins spread to the others?

Is there a way to remove that black stuff and not seriously affect the value of them? (these are all mostly worn coins and probably only worth the melt value). The value probably won't increase or decrease if I clean them but I don't want them all to look super clean but really worn. To me, they'd look fake.

Another anomaly to ponder: the Mercury dimes don't exhibit this black stuff. In the rolls that had some Roosevelts, Mercuries and some Barbers, only the Roosevelts had the black stuff.

I'm sure some of you know what black stuff I'm talking about but I could upload a few pics if that would help.

Is the black stuff old mold? I don't clean coins so I'm no expert here. Others that are more versed will answer I'm sure.

So, so sorry to hear your story! I'm 69 and know exactly where you've been with your Dad and collecting. I did the same with my Mom for many years. I'll keep lurking to see what the other folks have to suggest to you. Hang in there!

yes please post up a few pictures so we may be able to help you better than just guessing. are the Roosevelts you are talking about silver or clad? If your silver mercs and barbers are clear of the 'black stuff' I would venture that the Rossys are clad, but it is just a guess so far.
We need exact dates and images to better understand the issue.

I'll need time to read the tutorial on maximizing images and will post tomorrow. But in the meantime, I got some 100% acetone and cleaned one. Looks like whatever was on the one dime I cleaned came off. Could it be simple tarnish?

When you say 'cleaned' I hope you meant 'just soaked it' and did not rub it any. That can reduce some value on coins by inducing scratches on the surfaces.

Generally, acetone will not remove a patina or tarnish, but instead remove other particles or residue from the surface.
I'm glad you got it to 'clean up though

This is a better example but it's on a Washington quarter. When I opened the manila envelope, the quarter was in a piece of cellophane with a small bit of scotch tape keeping it shut. It's been in that envelope for at least 50 years. The envelop also had a piece of tape keeping it shut. I don't recall how we acquired this, but I'm sure my dad bought it mail-order or from a local shop. This one probably did not get submerged.

If the stains are from chemicals in the cellophane or scotch tape, can it be removed? If it can, should I try to remove it? Is there something better than acetate? I'll try to upload some pics of the dimes tomorrow.

I'd try an acetone soak, anything else will likely damage the coin. If acetone doesn't work, just embrace the coins as they are. A high grade coin will still be a high grade coin even with tarnish.

Here's a couple shots of the dimes. I've sorted them as you can see and I want to put the best example into my Littleton album.

Do they look like normal toning or is it something else? @Dearborn suggested acetone won't remove tarnish. I guess I'm asking you guys what the black might be so I can research it. If it's oxidation, I've seen where aluminum foil, baking soda and hot water might remove it.

Again, most of these are only worth melt value and I just want to put the best examples in the Littleton album.
