It's rare for me to be able to examine a nice 1940 specimen. seems like most are pretty rough. not sure what they normally look like fresh.

Try an acetone soak first. Also check ebay and look at a bunch of the same date coins for comparisons.

In addition, do a google image search on '1940 wheat cent'. A ton of images will appear--some with high photo resolution so you can zoom in without losing sharpness. Compare.
