And you need to put your brain in the shop for a sense-of-humor tuneup.

Well I will say that most con men try and rip you off. I had a question several weeks ago about a Buffalo nickel that I had and could not see the date. Steve actually sent me an email saying he would like to send me some of his formula that he uses to restore his heards. So he sent me a tube of juice. He did not have to do that. He also did not charge me anything for it nor did he charge me for shipping. So to say he is a Con-man I dont think is right.

Nah.. I think Bugaboo just took it out of context. It's plain to see it was a tongue-in-cheek auction.. some people's humor doesn't run that direction.

Con man? The buyer wasn't ripped off at all. He bid on an accurately described auction and paid around 85 cents per Buffalo - not a bad deal.

Yes. Although the item was accurately described, auctions like these ones always leave an unpleasant aftertaste. I just feel that doing something like describing in depth how to identify a roll VS a non-shotgun roll, and how to determine all the aspects of what you look for in truly unsearched lots on ebay, and not running off to the bank with nearly 40 bucks in your pocket to profit from. I feel that anyone who sincerely cared about expanding knowledge of the numismatic hobby, and tried to improve it, would never be able to be shameless enough to list this.

For any of you who think Back Off Boogaloo is a little shell shocked from cracking too many peanuts, let me say that I honestly understand his point - that I profited from starting this thread and the resultant bidding frenzy that ensued for the roll of nickels. I'm pretty sure that I even acknowledged this unintended consequence in a couple of my posts. What he probably is not aware of, however, were several other posts that led to this post, specifically, posts relative to ebay frauds and posts relative to deceptive advertising. Back Off Boogaloo: If it's any consolation to you, the song named "Back Off Boogaloo" by Ringo Starr (circa 1972) is now running through my head and I can't make it stop...and I always HATED that song! (By the way...I did not take $40 to the bank. The roll sold for $36.00. ebay and PayPal took nearly $4.00 in fees from me. FREE shipping was only free to the buyer, it cost ME another $3.00. I actually had .50 cents into each of the nickels, and I sent 42 nickels instead of 40, so there's $21.00 in costs. All told, I profited by $8.00, but that was before my winning bidder sent them back to me by mistake, costing me another $5.00 to return the shipment to him. So now I'm down to a net $3.00 profit. If my initial plan was to con people through my actions, I would say that I failed miserably!)

Anyway. weerdsteev, your listing had more impact than any ebay review, article, posting or whatever in educating some about those "shotgun" rolls. Nobody lost and just because you got to sell a few coins at a respectable (for all involved parties) price does not mean you did anything wrong. Quite the opposite - education comes in many forms and yours was a polite rap on the hand with a ruler that didn't hurt anyone. Calling you a con man is inaccurate and slanderous. I congratulate you. Well done!

I think this was a fantastic thing to do, and quite amusing. Having said that, if anyone wants to start browsing ebay like they SHOULD prior to making comments of an argumentative nature, you will be hard pressed to find a roll of guaranteed FULL DATE nickels for the same price. I'm failing to see what "bad" this auction is doing for the coin community at all.

Indeed. And anyone SHOULD peruse ebay that way in order to get a sense of what others are really discussing, or perhaps get the background of what's going on in order to understand. This would mean anyone would probably realize they were mistaken, and so not rush to judgment and make hostile statements. weerdsteev: you wouldn't happen to be a Libra, would you?

I thought this auction was hilarious--as well as the ensuing discussion.

Kurt, I agree with you. I guess it goes to prove that we are all a little different. I love the humor on this forum.
For the record, my dealings with Steve convince me he is a honest, straight forward, knowledge sharing, generous, gentleman.
