Great auction weerdsteev,

ebay is littered with cons selling "unsearched" shotgun rolls with the lucky VDB on one end and the super lucky 1909-s on the other. And sad to say, many fools bidding them up through the roof.

I see nothing wrong here and I thoroughly enjoyed your auction and this thread.

$4 is $4. You still profited.

I feel that anyone who sincerely cared about expanding knowledge of the numismatic hobby, and tried to improve it, would never be able to be shameless enough to list this.

Wow, that is just silly The guy sells an overcount roll(42) for $36 which comes out to about 85 cents a Buffalo and you have the gall to call him a rip-off artist? That is actually quite a decent price for common non-cull Buffaloes. I sold a batch of Buffaloes on the forum last fall that were probably in about the same condition for around $1 each, does that make me a shyster too? Weerdsteev's listings are helping to expose the rampant ebay fraud that is "unsearched shotgun rolls" and there is no way a sane person could argue with that. Or maybe Boogaloo is one of those "unsearched OBW shotgun roll" sellers who is getting his undies in a bunch when his gig gets exposed...

Bio, you shyster you..

But even so, we *should* be kind to someone who has any undies in a bunch, because not only is it rather painful aggravating, but has great potential for embarrassment. The gentlemanly and ladylike thing to do in these situations is to avert one's eyes until someone.. unbunches. Then, of course, carry on like nothing untoward has occurred.

*cough*

weerdsteev.. I'll donate toward your meds ;)

Rest in Peace

So, Boogaloo, by your criteria, if the auction had ended $4.50 lower, so Steve lost money, then everything would have been alright because he would not have profited? Wow. My next auction, I'll be sure and prominately note to all bidders, "Don't bid more than $x.00, or I'll make a profit!"

Sheesh. Relax. It was meant as a joke, and, if you read the full thread, he didn't actually expect anyone to bid it up at all. Con artist? Hardly.

At Walmart and Target, $4 gets you 30 days, but $10 is good for 90! I know this from personal experience!

biokemist6 ,

Yes, I do sell unsearched rolls, but, that doesn't effect my posts here. AND, my auctions are legit. They are actually unsearched, and I make no claims like "This has a 1916 at one end and a D at the other, so it'll be a full roll of 1916 D's. I'm an honest seller.

Excellent We like honest sellers. And honest buyers. Just plain honest people

However, I beg to differ that you being an unsearched roll seller has no bearing on your posts. Our personalities affect what we say, and our personalities are affected not only by our upbringing and environment, but also by our chosen (or unchosen) career paths. The tone of the posts suggested someone who was deeply offended. And that is definitely NOT what anyone is here to do (anyone who is is summarily escorted off the field of play).

We don't do dissension, deceit, flame baiting, or anything else even resembling being degrading or offensive. In that, this forum is one in a million. You could definitely be forgiven for assuming the people here were just like everywhere else.. at least until you had the chance to read through a few of the topics here Which is really what you should do to get a good idea of the folks. Lots of people who like to have fun, but who are also extremely helpful. Experts who repeat themselves daily to new collectors and haven't gotten tired of it (yet! :). People who give of their time and expertise and don't ask for anything in return except the conversation and camaraderie of fellow numismatists.

So.. basically.. don't jump to conclusions about motives just yet.. read a little first, and get to know people a bit

I whole-heartedly support weerdsteev's ebay auction, how he ran it, and how he discussed it openly in this thread. We need more people like weerdsteev to expose the rampant fraud on ebay with so-called unsearched bank-wrapped rolls. All of these bank-wrapped rolls are searched and a subset of them are seeded with semi-keys/keys so it winds up in feedback and gets more buyers to buy into the fraud. I do not see at all how making $3 on a $36 auction is ripping anyone off. 10% profit is not that great, really. I wonder how much per roll the "unsearched bank-wrapped roll" sellers are making?

I also suspect that weerdsteev's auction may have had the desired effect: people read it and learned about bank-wrapped rolls and stayed away from them. This caused a downward trend in sales for a week or two. But I also suspect that now that weerdsteev's auction isn't running, most of the business (and naivete) will return.

I won't reveal it here publically, but I know for certain of at least one bank-wrapped seller who sells them as unsearched but they are most definitely searched and seeded. I'm sorry, but that is just the apex of a con right there. weerdsteev's honesty and exposure of the fraud is a breath of fresh air and I, for one, would love to see all of those bank-wrapped unsearched coin sellers be booted from ebay so that young folks getting into collecting won't get burned. It's time for bank-wrapped sellers to wake up and try to do something good for this hobby. How do you think most of these folks will feel when they buy these bank-wrapped rolls- like they had been had. Or suckered. And they can't return them because they'd lose money in shipping and it's not worth it. This is how we drive people OUT of the hobby. There will be no collector base 20 years from now if folks like "unsearched bank-wrapped" sellers continue to cause harm to the hobby.

And I say this with utmost respect for Bugaloo and other bank-wrapped sellers. I understand your need to make money, etc. If you want to sell coins and make money, do it honestly, take the time to take pictures of your coins (no stock photos!) and do some good for the hobby. The only reason to do bank-wrapped strategy is to hype up the possibility of keys/semi-keys that won't be present (or are seeded occasionally) and for the purpose of making a profit that might be bigger than if you sell them as regular rolls. That's greed, pure and simple and cons naive buyers and young collectors. It leaves them with a bad taste in their mouth about the hobby. Believe me, I left the hobby for more than 10 years because of cons like the bank-wrapped roll sellers. It is not good for the hobby.

This is the way I felt after reading this thread. For the record, NO ROLL, EVER, is totally unsearched. Even the MINT inspects coins before they are rolled. If there are unsearched rolls, Bigfoot got them from the Aliens at Roswell, New Mexico.

Tired of questions?
1. Should I clean a coin?
2. How should I store a coin?
3. How do I grade a coin?
4. What coin is this?
5. What is this coin worth?
6. Whitman or Dansco?
7. Silver or not?
8. Paper or Plastic?
9. Cash or Credit?
10. Regular or Decaf?

I recently bought 12 rolls of "unsearched" wheats from ebay.
Oops. They were, most certainly, both searched and seeded. I knew, by the forth or fifth roll, that I would get one or two "special" coins per roll, maybe 3-5 from pre 1940, and the rest common 40s and 50's.

And that's about how it worked out.
now this wasn't so bad as it sounds, because A) I did wind up with a 1909-P VDB, and B), because he must not have been paying close attention at one point because I got *five* IH pennies in the same roll. But the rest held the percentage too closely to be accidental.
