*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

I opened up a piggy bank and was looking at some coins, and found a couple interesting ones. One is a 1965 quarter with a weird zigzag line in it and the other is a 1983 dime that looks almost shifted to the side a bit, with the lip on the edge and the date being messed up. These could both be just damage from being in circulation, as they are both a bit banged up. I thought it would be worth asking anyways, cause it can't hurt and it would be pretty cool if they were worth something. Thanks in advance.

to the Forum, Antwan! You are correct - that quarter is suffering from PMD, or post-mint damage. It appears that someone worked it over with a chisel or some other tool.

to the forum!

The quarter looks interesting, but that's definitely post-mint damage. Nothing in the minting process could produce that zigzag line. I'd say it was most likely intentionally done, but I'm not quite sure what may have been used to make that zigzag impression...

@ant, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes the "smushed" metal near that zigzag pattern means this is just damage. It still is an interesting thing to find though so of course keep it if you want.

Thank you all! I am having trouble adding the pictures of the dime here, so I will make a new post for it.

Interesting. Seems to be a pinking pattern applied after strike. Thanks, Doug.

That zig zag pattern definitely looks intentional PMD. However, I would check the reeded edge for evidence of being a clad coin and confirm with the weight as I see no copper showing through the damage caused near the rims. 1965's have been known to be struck on silver planchets.

The mark is a counter strike done long after the coin left the mint. It is just post mint damage.

I am not well learned in counterstrikes, yet I was under the impression that they usually represent some recognizable theme. Maybe this one brings ones attention to Zig Zag rolling papers and a 420 club.
If I am not mistaken, the Modern Coin Forum, contained herein, has a running thread on counterstruck coins. Perhaps someone there might have some insight. You never know.
Personally, I would hang on to it in my strange but true category even knowing it is not a true variety of error.
But not before I checked the edge and the weight for sure.
There are thousand of coins I regret not putting on the scale I wish I would have. As well as checking for rotated dies.
For myself, it is the hunt, value is the least of it. I am thrilled if I find a cent worth a buck. I just made my very first dollar on one of my finds after several years I sold a window salesman at my door a SKD w/RIDB for a buck. It gave me another year of motivation.
I have never done the math, but I'll bet my odds that finding a cent coin worth 100,000 times it's value are better than me winning the lotto jackpot. Depending on how many I look at. I look alot. More than I play lotto.
Weigh that 65!
