Could I trouble you fine people for some grading thoughts. This is the half that came from the ground nearby the 'goner' 1922 D LWC. I'll probably cycle through a few more rounds of soaking/ultrasonics but the details are evident now. For those interested, first two shots are straight out of the ground prior to even a rinse.

I'll say EF details (environmntal damage).

That coin couldn't be harmed by the cleaning that you did. It was so bad that you improved it.

Coinfrog - you really believe the last 2 images show environmental damage?

BTW - cleaning is simply mineral oil soak and ultrasonics. No abrasives at all.

How else do you account for the spotting in the right obverse field? The entire obverse looks "swabbed" after the soaking, unlike the reverse. I do not believe this coin would straight-grade.

Interesting, thanks. I always appreciate the opinions. No swabs by me. Nothing has touched the surface outside of oil and soundwaves since it came out of the ground.

I'm sure your're right, but still don't think it would straight-grade. But a wonderful find for sure!

XF Details, cleaned. Number of hairlines look like they were present on the reverse even before the soaking/ultrasonic. Curious how it looks in hand, the ED looks pretty heavy K9-K3, may have left some surface pitting post conservation. Certainly looks alot better though!

Brings up an interesting thought/conversation. While I know they used to clean coins back in the day I wonder how much the ground where it layed for 70-80 years could have naturally produce micro surface scratches. Found down by a creek, high bank so I would guess not in flood plain but the soil was loose sand and roots. Assuming it layed for that long, I imagine it saw 1000's of freeze thaws over the years. Abrasive environment for sure.
It looks far better in hand, lacks luster for sure but no pitting under scope.

Agree that the obverse has a cleaned look to it, however it came to be. Nice find and definitely improved by your oiled ultrasound process.

I have never ultrasonic a coin, but if I remember right the coin "vibrates" against the basket which might cause "wear" on the coin.Yes,no,maybe? John1

John, most certainly does and more specifically, if you have more than one coin at a time they can move and surely climb on top of each other! Baskets are bad news IMO.
One of the reasons I physically hold coins with dipping tongs and keep the cycles at 1 minute intervals.
I think whatever gunk ultrasonics is going to remove is coming off within the first few seconds anyway. Back to the soak and let the oil do its work.

EF-details (cleaned or ED). Either way, it certainly looks nicer after conservation efforts than before.

You did a great job of conservation "cleaning" of this coin. I'm in the XF to AU range. With our rocky and sandy soils and mining chemicals that leach into our creeks, I'm impressed that she looks so good! Great find DOCC!

there are just quite a bit of hairlines all over this coin. was it from being buried for all those years or from the cleaning is irrelevant at this point as the coin will not grade straight. it also doesn't matter if the coin was returned cleaned or damaged imo. its still going to grade probably XF details
nice conservation though and I hope you did not add to the surface issues by using anything to rub it with
