I am somewhat of a novice at selling coins and had an experience today that made me think I was being cheated by a coin dealer. I took a NGC graded MS-64 1921-D Morgan dollar in to a local coin shop to see if they would buy it. They offered me $200 and showed me this magazine which showed the Blue Sheet price of $200-250 as justification for the offer. I thought this was quite low based on my online research. I researched online and discovered they stopped publishing the Blue Sheet in 2018 so this had to be an old price list. The owner told me it would be worth $300 if it was a PCGS graded coin. Was the dealer low balling me and using outdated information? Thanks.

He or she is in business to make money I know nothing of value of that coin but do know if it's worth a certain number they are going to pay you less so they can make money them self. They are dealers not collectors.

to the CCF Dealers that I have sold to generally start their offers at '10 back of Bid' - which is 10% less than the current Greysheet Bid price on the coin. Greysheet is the monthly publication of CDN (Coin Dealer Newsletter) and is available to anyone for a single issue price of $9.99 If you want current pricing on coins to sell (or purchase) through a professional dealer then purchase a single copy of the current month Greysheet and use that as your guide. To get you started - Greysheet has two prices for each grade of each coin listed. Bid and Ask Bid is what a dealer will sell a coin direct to another dealer - think of this as the wholesale price. Ask is what a dealer will sell a coin to you - think of this as the retail price. So - '10 back of Bid' is what a dealer will generally pay you to purchase your coin, This is, obviously, 10% less than the wholesale price and gives them the pricing cushion necessary to sell the coin and make a profit. Always keep in mind that Greysheet like all other price guides is just a guide. Lots of other factor can affect the value of a coin such as strike, eye appeal, toning, TPG name, etc. To answer your question on that 1921-D Morgan and whether or not you were being lowballed - the answer lies in the current Greysheet should you choose to purchase a copy.

A single copy of Greysheet is $40.00 . The days of a single copy @ $9.99 long gone . Check out their website ! To the OP , Bluesheet pricing is still in the current Greysheet , APRIL 2023 pricing Bluesheet In MS64 is $250 for NGC 1921D. PCGS is higher. That said ebay SOLD prices are WAY HIGHER! Doubt the dealer was messing you up . All smart dealers use Greysheet and generally pay 10 to 20 Back of bid depending on needs /wants

Heritage sold prices for 1921-D $1 MS64 since the first of the year range from $252 to $540 for one with CAC. I'm not going to add them all up but I'd estimate the average is around $350. The dealer offered you around 60% of that which seems typical.

Recent ebay NGC MS64 1921 D sold are in the $400 range. If you sell on ebay, the selling cost is going to be about $60. If you sell the coin at Great Collections Auction, you will most likely net over $300 with fees and shipping. The dealer was low balling you a little bit, but they need to make a profit to stay in business.

There is not a $100 difference in value for similar MS64 1921 D between PCGS and NGC as the dealer noted. The difference in value is mostly going to be because of toning, luster, marks, CAC sticker, and varieties.

You got a fair offer.
You're lucky he didn't offer you greysheet or back of greysheet.
