I've been using my commercial bank account status at Chase to buy/exchange countless numbers of coins. I've gotten to know most of the tellers and their schedules at a dozen branches in the area. I try hard to mix up my visits to be less of a nuisance. Yesterday I broke with my traditional schedule and visited a Bank of America branch. I asked the teller for $10 in rolled pennies. The teller was very accommodating.

During my search last night I noticed all of the customer rolled wrapped coin were 4,5 and even 6 cents short........

I weigh all my rolls and always search heavy to light. I was planning to return to the branch and complain about the discrepancy until I opened the last and lightest roll. It weighed 115 gms. A full roll of copper cents weighs 152.85 gms and full roll of zinc cents weighs 126. gms. The lightest and last cent roll of my search weighed 114 gms. I was fit to be tied until I opened the last "50 Pennies" wrapper, it contained 50 dimes.........

My question to you is do I return to the bank and lodge my complaint about all the errors in the rolls and return the $5 in dimes? Please let me know your thoughts.

PS: I did find two DDR's during the hunt. 2009 Formative Years index finger and http://goccf.com/t/443961

Complain, yes; return the dimes, no. I believe your complaints will go nowhere. Most banks hate rolls (and roll hunters especially) and probably hope shorted rolls act as a deterrent. It would not surprise me if they were they ones shorting them.

Returning the dimes will do nothing to correct their low-count wrapping. Finders keepers.

I would just pocket the profit you made on the dimes as banks go by the amount of money the roll is *supposed to have* to account for a teller's "drawer balance"... he or she won't be out of balance as a result of the discrepancies you happened upon. With that said, I'd bring a little scale the next time to that branch.

It's so ironic that you mention this today as I had an interesting experience of my own this past Monday...

One time a little before C0VD hit, I bought 20 rolls of quarters and every one of them had 39... yeah, I wasn't happy, but what could I do? So, I decided, going forward, that I would bring my little scale with me to a couple of branches I've had shortage issues in the past with to weigh the CWR. My assumption is that the MWR are good about 99.75% of the time, so I don't weight them, and don't fret about the occasional error on those.

Anyways, on Monday, I bought 25 rolls each of quarters, dimes, and nickels at one of my branches. The quarters were fine, but the dimes were all over the place... my scale goes up to 500 grams, so I typically put 4 rolls on at a time, and if they weigh 454 grams or more, I assume I've got at least as many dimes as I'm supposed to have... anyways, one group weighed 447 grams (a single roll weighed 107 grams, so I asked to exchange it). The nickels were really bad... 11 of the 25 rolls I was purchasing weighed 195 grams or so, 5 short of the 200 grams or so they should weigh... The teller kept grabbing rolls from another teller and I would weigh them as I got them... most of them were one coin short. Eventually, a manager came over and she bluntly told me "we can't keep doing this"... and I'm like "the rolls are short, I'm not getting what I paid for"... the teller I dealt with was new and the manager seemed to be rushing her. I eventually got 25 full nickel rolls.

When I got to my car, I discovered I only had 24 dime rolls - the rushed teller never replaced my short roll. I didn't want to go back in and deal with the pushy manager, so I ended up calling customer service and put in a $5 claim.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I'd return the dimes--given that they were picked up at B of A, a place you (evidently) don't frequent. Great opportunity to establish solid rapport. In this instance, I'd pass on the shortage complaint. I had something similar happen several years ago. Not a full roll of dimes, but something like 20 in a roll mixed with cents. Took the roll back to the bank. They insisted that I keep them, and for quite some time afterward I was well treated when it came to having access to some of the more interesting stuff a couple tellers would come across. Even snagged some Eisenhower dollars stuffed in the back of a vault drawer.

Personally, I would not complain, as then they might not sell you coins at all. I would just keep everything that you found if I were you (cents and dimes included), and just leave it at that.

To any complaints the bank will reply something like, "We take in rolls and hand them out as marked on the wrapper." Some rolls you get will be short, others long, it tends to balance out. You are $4.50 ahead from that cent roll filled with dimes, so that should cover all shortages within other rolls for some time. I'd leave it at that.

First off, thank you for the feedback. Your advice ran the full gambit of options.

I returned to the BOA branch this afternoon with the re-rolled pennies (all exactly .50). Informed a different teller I bought $10 in rolled pennies yesterday and all the customer rolled pennies were short 3,4,5 and 6 cents. The teller said we don't count customer re-rolled coinage. I said I understand, it would take far too much time. I also said I understand a penny or two mistake either way. However, 3,4,5 and 6 cents short in every roll seemed unreasonable, and I don't expect the bank to cover the difference. I left the issue at that and got my cash.

I did not mention the penny roll with $5.00 in dimes to the teller. I thought the bank paid .50 for the roll, didn't count it and why should the bank get the $4.50 benefit. Seems to me the person that shorted all the penny rolls was the one who lost $4.50 by rolling dimes in a penny wrapper. A little CRH poetic justice.

Funny thing about the whole episode - the only penny wrapper that had 50 coins in it was the wrapper that contained 50 dimes.
