Strike weakness in the usual spots, hair above the braid, second feather, head and shoulder of the Buffalo. Average strike for the date. Die state has started to affect some of the devices, heavier flow lines noticeable in the field below the feathers. This one shows VF wear IMO, but overall remaining details and a couple points of weakness around LIBERTY and the date hurt it. Guessing they said F15

Then I'm likely over analyzing grading buffs from images is always fun. Show me the same coin in 3 different angles and I'll probably give 3 different grades! I'm sure it's likely lower than what I guessed.

Not sure what's so funny, but I still think sharper pics are needed.

Somewhere between F-15 and XF-40. Nothing would surprise me based on these awful pictures.

Guess the grade of the coin or what the TPG put on the slab? What TPG slabbed it? John1

again yellow tone to photos are not helping with luster
the 20(S) is a bugger to grade due to all kinds of things happening at that mint
heres what I see. heavy die polishing feather 1, rear hock. weak strike reverse (typical). looking at the date the 20 is very sharp. top of head and feathers cross area are saying XF/AU coin.
I'm a solid XF45
unless PCGS gave this one to someone knowledgeable with early buffs then its most likely under graded. many times they deduct quite a bit for strike when a lot of it can be attributed to die polishing. I think PCGS gave it VF35

Looks VF-35 to me. 20-S is known for lousy strikes.

Can't really argue with that.

Quote: Can't really argue with that. I can. I would never, ever send a buff in for grading. these people are idiots. i'll eat my shorts if this coin is F15 they should at least try using their own photograde to get closer to an accurate grade. I would crack this out of this holder and burn the holder

@jessvc1, any way to get another round of pics with different lighting, like you did for the full slab shot, just close up and more focused? @panzaldi, this is why I don't touch photograde for buffs. Very inconsistent On PCGS' part. That said, the two coins really aren't that far off. Lighting and sharpness of the photos is making it look a bit more extreme IMO. Taking into account slight strike weakness, I had it at VF(20). The OP's example has pretty consistent wear across all high points and rim. While yes, there is Die Deterioration causing some mushiness in the devices, there really isn't a lot of die polishing going on. Less than other dies from this date. Same as strike, slight strike weakness, but average IMO for this date (maybe even slightly better than average). No way is this an XF-AU coin, respectfully. As I said before, show a Buffalo in 3 different lights/angles and grades start to change. It really needs to accurately portray the coin to be of help for grading by images. This can be very difficult to do (almost impossible at times) because of the overall design of this coin. Throw in strike and die state and it becomes a mess . I've bought thousands of Buffalo nickels from images, and my grade opinion almost always changes in hand, if even just slight. They truly are a coin that needs to be in hand to grade accurately.
