Hi,dear colleagues! I am now asking for your advice as "professionals". I own a gold "imperiala" russian coin of 1769. Equal to 10 roubles. Unfortunately, the coin was holed in the past. The question is if as it is, it still have numismatic value (and how much,in %,from the original catalogue value, given for undamaged pieces?!) or, in the contrary, it is good for melting, as it is worth only its gold content's value ?!? & Thanks for your kind help! In my opinion, you can expect a strong premium above melt value. We can find examples of mounted coins in lower grade than yours like this one https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=3017that sold for about 80% over bullion price of the day (1300 CHF/oz). And badly removed mounts like this one https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=4001that sold at about 100% over bullion price of the day (1650 euro/oz). The market for coins with significant damage is of course unpredictable, but given the condition of your coin in the absence of the hole (much higher than either of these two examples), I would be surprised if your coin did not match this level of premium.

The hole is a shame as it would be a strong high 4 figure if not towards 5 figure coin. That said even in this condition, I think 2000 at minimum is a fair number.
Nice one!

Thank you very much, friends for your kind opinion! I wish to let you both know that this coin is in my family since about 200 years (as far as I know) and unfortunately the "shame" (right!) hole was made (about 80 years ago) by my mother, by great fear of the communist regime which prohibited any gold coins and later even the silver ones. My heart is crying for that hole on such a beautiful coin but all these happened before my birth & were out of my control! I still have 2 little questions for you both:This coin has a KM value in XF of 11000$. That is a fact! Your kind answers confused me a bit because I didn't clearly understand if I am able to expect 80% of this price or the melt value + 80% of this melt value. These are 2 very different values... And,also, 2000 $ seems to me a very low price, compared to the catalogue value for these details of grade... Andi

Key word is minimum, not maximum. Regardless of the condition, its holed and is unrealistic to expect 5 figure.
Definitely a shame but I'm sure you can hold onto it and pass it down to your children some day

Dear gxseries, I never expected a 5 figures price/value but from 2000 to 9999 (ha, ha!) there is a long way...I was thinking about 60-70% of the catalogue value...that is 6000-7000$.Is this still not realistic? What would be then the maximum price I may expect, please?! Not the minimum!...
Thanks again!

I think the hole keeps it under $1000 USD

Imperial Russian coins are very much appreciated by collectors, but the hole definitely makes a minus in the price of the coin. NGC only assesses metal at $773.83, so I think you can easily ask for $ 1200 for it. P.S.Don't look that I'm from Russia, I know almost nothing about Russian coins)

Hi, Keith & Slerk! Thanks for your responses but I wish to remaind you that the KM catalogue gives a value of 11,000$ for a piece in XF grade and more than 8000$ for a VF20 piece. From these figures to 1000-1200$ is a very long way...That means that more than 90% of the value is lost...I am awared that the hole is a damage...but so,so much? If we know that only the melt gold value is about 800$, it remains almost nothing for numismatic interest & value...

I'm just telling you what I would be willing to pay for this coin. The hole does hurt the value that much. And the prices in any book I have ever looked at, are about 30-40% to high.

One of these sold at Heritage Auctions in 2019 for $5280 including buyers premium, so $4400 give or take. It was graded XF40.
The hole is a problem. Work backwards from that starting point.

I think $2000 is not unrealistic based on similar sales, condition and current bullion price. Every damaged coin is unique, prices on most gold coins move around with underlying bullion values, so even a selling price from two years ago can be tough to translate into a price today. So it is a speculative exercise until the coin is sold (i.e. nobody can be wrong ). Edit: Somehow I missed this one, XF details, mount removed, $2400. https://coins.ha.com/itm/russia/wor...ption-071515In my opinion, better eye appeal because the mount removal looks nearly undetectable. Gold price was lower then ($1500/oz), so that may figure into the current value.

Quote: Andi, please tell me that you are not going to sell this irreplaceable family heirloom. Please. Selling family heirlooms is really a bad idea. I could advise you to send the coin for evaluation to NGC or PCGS and keep it in your family. It will be a valuable relic, and slab only add value and status to it.
