Any thoughts on how the center of the 9's can get deformed like this?

I can see the MD on the outside of the 9's but can MD deform the metal inside of the 9's and make it oval shaped (red circle's)?

What else in the minting process do you think would have caused it?

Hi

Ejection Doubling

The following defect is seen less frequently, but it is important to be able to understand it when one is found.

When the strike is complete and the die begin to withdraw, the feed finger on its side has begun its movement to eject the struck coin.

It happens that the coin which has just been minted remains stuck after one of the two die.

It is then that in its course the feed finger will push the struck coin to eject it.

As it is glued, the latter will practically tear it off by pushing it and this is what we can observe by looking at this kind of lining.

The lining is sloping, we often see tear lines of the metal on the side of the pattern(s) and almost always metal that is raised on top of the pattern(s).

If there is any metal protruding from the top of a pattern, it is from this phenomenon.

Thanks Castor!
I was wondering why I could see the zinc in the top left corner of the inside of the 9's. The copper plating was pushed up and is raised on the top of the pattern.

Good evening Enyaw

Here is a coin I have (ejection doubling) where you can see the zinc.

Thanks Castor, very well explained. I have one of these 1999 pennies. Your answer is the first excellent answer I found about it.
