Figuring environment damage here but averages .12 light on a scale. Curious how much a plating error of some sort would take off? Posted next to a year that was close for comparison.

I think the experts will say PMD. I can see a sliver of silver color at corner of Jefferson's eye. Acidic environment maybe.

I think the slight underweight is best explained by lost metal from circulation wear plus exposure to a corrosive environment.

Also when comparing one coin against another, it is best to use the same year and mint of the coin you have questions about. Things change from mint to mint and year to year...

@dearborn I usually would but simply just used to show some sort of color comparison I didn't feel it was crazy important but feel like I discovered doubling in the 85 next to it not sure if machined though.

'Blackened' nickels are a common find and the result of environmental damage.

I actually found the majority of the Jefferson set in 'blackened' state while roll hunting to complete my collection.
