Hi, again. I recently came across this 1899 half dollar being offered, and have some images of it. At first, the coin appears to be ok, but the star details and the date appear to be a bit wonky according to the photos. Is this due to wear or is the coin counterfeit? See the document below for images. Thank you for your help. https://docs.google.com/document/d/...zSigXGo/edit

I do not know enough about this series to determine (from these pics) to judge if fake or not. Nevertheless, a very cheap and simple test would be to do a comparative ping tone test against another known genuine .900 fine Half Dollar.
Such a test would give a good indication towards proving that the alloy of the coin is genuine or not. It would not prove anything about if the date or the stars are a bit 'wonky', as a result of being altered.
Also check for weight.

All I can tell from the images is that the obverse has the correct type for 1899. I can't see the position of S in Pluribus on the reverse relative to the beak, which would determine whether the reverse type is correct or not. If these are seller images, I'd just pass on it. I can't stand a listing where they can't bother to provide focused images.

I see nothing wrong with it. All strangeness can be attributed to wear and a strange pattern toning. Rims, color of the metal, and wear all appear authentic.
A simple weight would likely verify the authenticity.
Can anybody give specific examples of why they think it is counterfeit? Date is wrong, what does that mean? Positioning looks accurate.

Too bad we don't have better images from straight above - not at an angle and better focus could help too.
