I got this quarter out of a vending machine after putting in a dollar for a $0.75 soda. I don't know what's up with this coin. It says it's a 2008 Hawaii State Quarter but it has this weird bumpy ridge on the back which actually looks kind of cool. It looks like the Hawaiian guy is is pointing to Hawaiian islands or volcanoes or something and then on the front you can kind of see some more bumps. There's also an odd texture this quarter has and I can see the copper through the outer silver in some places I think I don't know what happened this quarter. Maybe it was melted somehow or maybe it was made this way. I'm not sure,_ anybody have any idea?

That's the answer. It could not possibly have happened during the striking process.

Heat was used (by a hot fire/torch (American style) to heat up the coin until the cladding separated from the copper core.

It has heat damage after it left the mint, so it is not a mint error. It is PMD.

Aye, heat damage. Curiously, I've seen more heat damaged quarters over the many years vs. other denominations.

Damaged in a fire. The raised area is partly flattened to fit into a vending machine.

It wasn't struck like that. Just a face value coin.
