Hey Everyone!
I recently found this bicentennial quarter that was struck through. I was curious if there is enough here that it should be attributed as struck through thread/fiber.

Thanks!

Can't quite tell given the photos--a bit too contrasty. Yes, coin photography can be a bugger.

Just showing die wear. Note even the bust design is affected. The two dies are showing different die states. So a new die marriage is seen on the reverse with a fresher design. (it happens)

Anything is possible. Coop has a good explanation.

if it is, it's so minor that I doubt it.
Don't forget that graders only increase the size 5X so if
you can't see it then, it is irrelevant.

Thanks for the input. I'm curious about the note about it being die wear. The anomaly is incuse to the design like you would expect to see with a struck through.

As an alternative example the image below is of a coin I set aside for an example of extreme die wear. The die wear shows up as raised areas in the design.

There also appears to be one other small area that was struck through at the bottom of Washington's neck. That doesn't answer the question of the struck through thread area but it seems fairly common that coins that are struck through often have multiple areas affected.

Lastly, the note about the field and design being affected would make sense if the thread was laying across that part of the coin. I'm unaware of a reason why it would need to be limited to either the field or the design.

As mentioned in another comment, it's a fairly small area of the coin impacted but I always find these discussions helpful so that I can better diagnose other coins down the road. So it's definitely not a huge find on its own but more of an opportunity for me to refine my knowledge on diagnostics.

All input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
