This is the only gold coin in the collection I recently inherited. It's very modern and I don't know why it was graded, because I thought these eagle coins were basically bought for bullion value only. Does this have value in excess of bullion price? Thanks for any thoughts. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** Edited by khunchang 04/21/2023 1:40 pm

$25's If you don't have the app...you should download it. It's a good tool. Once loaded...click on Bullion Coins - click on Gold Eagles 1986-Present - click on $25 Gold Eagle 1986-Present - click on 1987...then swipe right to left 3x's will take you to AUCTIONS. Check it out...I think you'll like it ; ) smat

Because this piece is dated 1987 (second year of issue) and is a certified American Gold Eagle there is a premium. I am surprised they sell for almost double melt but physical precious metals are hot this year. Here is your coin on NGC's cert page: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/3347144-002/69/Hope this helps.

The coin itself looks like 1986 to me. Is that right?

Quote: The coin itself looks like 1986 to me. Is that right? @Alpha2814 There's quite the difference in price too! With almost 600K minted in 86 compared to only 131K for 87...I could see why... To send back or not? I guess you could sell it as an 86 included in the description mentioning the slab error...maybe there are slab error collectors out there? But then again...some might question it's authenticity altogether? smat

What a pity (about the difference in price). However, I have to get it re-encapsulated; otherwise, I'm afraid it would be un-sellable. I have already asked NGC about it and they were very responsive. They're sending me a return shipping label.
I know it's probably futile, but I'll submit it for a regrade at the same time. I can't see any flaws at all. I suppose there's a chance they'll give it an MS-70.

I don't think it has been mentioned but fractional ASE from that era have a significant premium. This is based on rarity and you can see these trends in PCGS price guides. Check out the 1989/90/91 1/2 oz!
