Quote: I prefer isopropanol (100%) and xylene for copper. That's odd considering you personally advised me to do an Acetone rinse on my copper 1950s proof coins before securing them in AirTites. Do you use Acetone for copper proofs and isopropanol/xylene for business strikes? Or am I missing something?

Nice results. I use my fingers to retrieve the coin in acetone as well. I have my distilled water dip next to the acetone, so the fingers get a good rise too.

First 24 hour soak. I'm going to soak this very dirty 1935-P for 24 hours. Around the date there is a tiny bit of mint luster which is hard to tell in a picture. Curious how this one cleans up. Will edit this post with after pics tomorrow. Updated! Before After Before After

@hord, this is an interesting experiment and I'm really glad that you are sharing your results with us. I do have one friendly suggestion though. It might be a little easier for us to see the difference these acetone soaks make if you put before and after images side by side into the same picture. You could use photoshop or an equivalent program to accomplish this. That would also help you to keep all pictures the same magnification. In this way, we would see the effect of the soak more directly rather than having to "remember" as we scroll down the pictures. Again, just a thought--the current format works pretty well too.

@spence fair suggestion but with the 300kb limit I'm worried that squeezing two coins into one picture will make them too grainy. I can try though.
Do you know how to just post two pictures side by side instead of them stacking vertically using the [img] tag?

Quote: I prefer isopropanol (100%) I can't comment on the effectiveness of isopropanol as a grime-removing solvent, but be aware that it is quite hygroscopic and will adsorb humidity from the air. As such, it does not remain 100% for long and will have water in it.

Quote: Do you use Acetone for copper proofs and isopropanol/xylene for business strikes? Yes Proofs should not need much and acetone will dehydrate and evaporate much faster.

Quote: but be aware that it is quite hygroscopic and will adsorb humidity from the air All solvents will adsorb water. Always keep your containers well sealed. However, at that level, it's effects are insignificant for coin conservation.

I have experienced rainbow toning on coppers with luster from time to time. I can't imagine I'm alone on that.

Tried it on a 1956 Proof Penny. Did a long 24 hour dip on the proof. In some ways it's better but the luster seems less mirror-like. If I do a proof dip again it's going to be a very quick plunge instead of a soak. Before After Before After

There is a free photo program called "PhotoScape X. This is a great program to use for many things. one of them I use it for is to produce mosaics Here is an example of what it can do. (you can also specify the final file size and quality when you save a file.) If I can do this with ASE coins and still have them look good, it will be great for cent sized coins too.

Thanks Dearborn. Is there any particular reason why this forum still has a 300kb limit in 2023?
