Can anyone please tell me what they think happened to this Lincoln Cent?
I have no idea how to distinguish what happened here. Thank you in advance!

There is really no way to tell how it happened, but it has been damaged after it left the mint. Is there corresponding damage on the reverse? If so, it may have been hit with some kind of hollow punch. Another possibility is something rotating against it. Regardless, damage is damage.

Agree that whatever caused this it happened post-mint. Show us a photo of the reverse for more clues.

Damage is not a mint error. It is post strike damage, not an error.
