Greetings all. I came into a small collection of coins and I noticed something strange on this coin.

On the reverse it looks like the bottom of the E in independence is missing or is smeared.

On the obverse it looks like some distortion in the 1776. Some dents and the top of the 7 has an extra piece hanging down.

Is this a mint error? Maybe just normal wear?

Many thanks for any info.

The flattening on the date could be a Struck Through Grease issue or circulation flattening. Either way there is no premium for this. Possible die crack on the '7'. Again not a premium for the coin.

@heav, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes I agree with @coop that this looks most like damage to me. There might have been a small amount of grease in the die when this coin was struck and so part of that letter E didn't strike up fully.

Likely a bit late with this, but it's customary to post full, large and sharp pics of the obverse and the reverse--then, any needed close-in images. The full pics establish the context for what we're looking at. Thanks.
