Hey everyone, can anyone help explain to me what is going on with this Wheat penny. I have a handful of 1909 pennies but one of them is smaller than the others, not a perfect circle and doesn't appear to have a rim edge. Just started getting into collecting and any honest help would be great. Thanks

This has been deliberately reduced in size.

Ok, thank you for that coinfrog. I inherited a collection of coins from my grandfather and just started going through them. I figured something was odd about it

Yes, post-strike damage. Very likely intentional.

to the CCF!

I think I've heard Coop use the term 'Soda-Pop Coin.' It may have been cut down to fool the coin mechanism on a Coca-ColaŽ vending machine. It's done to make the weight and size closer to a dime. This was done back when you could get a 61/2 ounce bottle of The Real Thing for just 10˘.

When I was a kid I had a better idea. The old soda machines had the bottles with the metal caps sticking toward you with a glass door that you opened then once the coin was put in you could pull your soda out. In stead of using a coin I just got a large container and popped the caps off on all the sodas and got all the sodas for free.

anyway, can we get a better picture (not so dark) of the 'reduced cent'?
I'll garner a guess that it has been filed down or something similar

@oddguy, I probably wouldn't have come up with that myself!
