I would grade this a Fine 15, maybe a VF 20 on a good day. What do you guys think? The coin does not really show any obvious signs of cleaning.

I actually did scan a 1200ppi set of images of both the obverse and reverse of the coin, and they show the details just a bit more clearly (only about half of the S mintmark can be made out on the 600ppi pic you see above, but on the 1200ppi reverse photo the mintmark is clearly visible), but the image size is more than double what CCF allows. Here's a better shot of the reverse, in 1200ppi resolution.

This coin would not grade due to Environmental Damage (ED). The details appear VF or so. In its present condition it is a melt value piece worth $20.

Tis what I feared. I actually received this coin today from my grandmother, who came to visit. So the story of how I got it, to me, is worth much more than the coin's value.

To me it looks like it was plated or painted, and it's peeling off.

i agree with PMD and the coin would only have silver at this time but the story is worth considerably more

How do you get 1200ppi images under 300kb?!

I used the Pixlr X app to shrink the resolution down from 1800x1800 to 900x900.

Give this one a bath in Acetone for 15 or 20 minutes and see if the black comes off. Otherwise this is VF details, environmental damage.

Yes, I'd go with a loooooong acetone soak--several days. Worked pretty well on a similarly encumbered Peace dollar I had many years ago.

I don't think I have any acetone on my person, but I may consider ordering it. The 1925-S is somewhat of a scarce date, actually. Only about 1.6 million minted. So it may be worth it if it can turn a $20 coin into a $40 one.

I'm skeptical, but good luck!

You just spent any potential upgrade value.
