given the images (and maybe my monitor) this coin appears coppery, but given it slightly heaver than normal weight. it could have been rubbed with mercury a long time ago, then polished later on.

Young collectors from many years ago, cleaned coins with silver or copper polish. That is what it looks like to me.

Color looks red to me. If plated it could be 3.12 grams. If it were silver, it would weigh 2.5 grams if it were a cent struck on a dime planchet. So if the weight in in the 3 gram area it would be a normal cent planchet. (That is the only way it would be a silver planchet) The devices would would be real close to the rims:
