Hi, everyone. As I'm new to this forum so please delete this post if this question is not appropriate in this forum. I want to ask that for 1908 no motto, even though its mintage is lower, the price of it in au straight graded (ngc/ PCGS) is similar to its 1908-d no motto counterpart. Is this a correct statement or is it vice versa? I have tried to look at past auctions or ebay but I could not get a definitive answer so I hope I could get this clear up on my mind.

Thank you for everyone's time.

The 1908 no motto boasts a mintage of 33,500 while the 1908D no motto has a mintage of 210,000. If you look at the PCGS site you will see that the values are about $1800 for either variety in AU-55. It isn't until the grade reaches MS-60 and above that the values are different. The 1908 D no motto is more valuable than the 1908 no motto in the higher MS grades.

I don't know but I'm guessing like lot of other coins, value depends on the number of survivors, not the mintage. People probably saved both No Motto coins because With Motto coins were also minted that year, and the public was aware of the controversy with Roosevelt not wanting god mentioned on coins for his personal scriptural reasons. Again, just a guess.

I agree with kbbpll that original mintage is not necessarily have a good correlation to value. It's really about demand versus current supply.

I'm not an expert on the $10 gold series, but there are quite a few price guides out there to help address your question.

Numismedia http://www.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices/fmv.shtml
PCGS and NGC price guides give you an idea. Recent sales on ebay, Heritage and Great Collections are also what I use.
