Tharris83, Please properly crop photos before posting them,we only need to see the coin not the background. Your coin looks like what we call a "cup holder coin",you know a coin that has been sitting in a cars cup holder. John1

Well jon1 aren't you just a delightful cup of black coffee my apologies for disturbing you this morning. I'm also sorry that you have nothing better to do than be rude and disrespectful to strangers to make yourself feel important. I do appreciate your opinion and that's that your opinion. Have a wonderful day being so delightful. And my apologies For my first post being so sloppy maybe if you weren't such a jerk you could give advice instead of being a rude grumpy old man good day sir

I don't think @john1 was being disrespectful in any way. He was providing you with an answer to how the coin got damaged, and giving advice on uploading photos for future posts to help us help you. Keep in mind we are all taking time out of our mornings to help people identify coins. I'm 20 btw.

I'm seeing a well-worn '97 P nickel with staining or a partially worn away layer of film-like crud--possibly residue from died liquid.

Weight? If under weight, it can make the devices weaker. If the weight is normal, then the coin could have been altered. Post strike coin damage. Color was altered post strike. It was normal, but the color stained/altered. (Also has the appearance of glue in that case the coin could be slightly over weight) The coin doesn't appear to be an error.

with the others here, it appears that this coin is stained somehow. Perhaps an acetone soak may 'clean' it up a bit. Give it an over night soak and report back with results if you would.

Asking what's wrong with a coin like this could lead to answers you don't want to know... Just sayin. There's something brown smeared on the surface. Let's leave it there. Probably wash your hands.
