I have seen a few 1920's Peace dollars and one 1878s Morgan holdered in Smithsonian Institution NGC holders. I am wondering were these sold by the Smithsonian to raise money or who sold them and how many were slabbed in these holders and how they were chosen, if not just random. I reached out to NGC and they said they did not keep a census on the numbers but the example I showed them of the 1878s Morgan was authentic and put in a holder by them. I have just not seen these until lately. I know NGC does alot with the Smithsonian Institution and I have read some articles, I just have not came across how these were marketed and why. Thanks in advance for any info. Heres a pic of the 1878S.

Not the full answer to your question, but a little background discussion on Smithsonian and NGC in this old thread: http://goccf.com/t/156845

Thankyou @spence I had read that and a few articles about the relationship while trying to research them. I was curious about the how-why and where so to speak and if it was a promotional type thing or how it worked. I just cannot find any info other than they have teamed up because the Smithsonian likes the holders for their coins in the museum. I wondered if maybe the Smithsonian store sold these at some point.

Thanks I hope so @coinfrog! I see lots of modern private issue in the Smithsonian holders but just a couple actual Peace dollars and 1 Morgan.

It seems NGC and the Smithsonian Institute have been in regular partnership both ways - donations and encapsulating coins for preservation and display of their collections. Some are sold, and a portion of the proceeds from each coin will go directly to the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic department, helping to ensure the preservation of coins like these for future generations. In 2008, and again in 2014, the Smithsonian Institution selected NGC holders to preserve some of its most important rarities. Many of the Smithsonian's rarest and most important pieces are housed in a specially designed NGC holder to allow for both long-term protection and easy access to researchers. NGC has also provided significant financial support to the museum and in 2012 alone NGC contributed $100,000. https://www.ngccoin.com/about/indus...institution/It comes as no surprise that a 1921 Morgan silver dollar is part of the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic collection. Since this type of Morgan is considered an American classic, we had acclaimed numismatic expert Jeff Garrett take a look through our discovery to hand-select the best for further inspection by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) where their team of experts assigned each with a stellar grade of Mint State-64 (MS64). In addition, each of these 1921 Morgans comes sonically sealed in an acrylic holder by NGC along with a special Smithsonian Institution Coin Classic label! A portion of the proceeds from each coin will go directly to the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic department, helping to ensure the preservation of coins like these for future generations. These coins have stuck around for almost a century, but time isn't on your side to make one yours! https://www.govmint.com/1921-p-morg...oin-classics and Peace https://www.govmint.com/1922-p-peac...oin-classics

Thanks! @datadragon. So they prob select certain ones or someone donates them to be sold by big dealers or auctioned off to help fund the numismatic department of the Smithsonian after NGC holders them. I had never seen these before so it is interesting!

I had never seen these before so it is interesting! Well, GovMint.com is in authorized partnership with the Smithsonian and makes coins for sale, reproductions and such I see usually which at times are interesting as they may otherwise be patterns or coins you could not get otherwise or at prices that noone generally could typically afford, and on those also portions of the proceeds do go to smithsonian. Unsure whether such reproductions are desired by serious collectors or increase in value over time being at least officially authorized and usually limited mintage. What you have seems to be an extension of that agreement, it is a real coin (not reproduction) in a real ngc graded holder, with a smithsonian label fully authorized from them but may or may not at times have anything to do with coins given/donated or held at some point within the smithsonian collection but a collectible coin on its own with the added authorized special label attached due to the parties involved and their partnerships. Or as you said, potentially could take donations or duplicate coins within the collection for that purpose. I know ANA also sells duplicates from their collection in monthly ebay auctions but without special labels. A few interesting examples of the reproductions: 1879-2019 Smithsonian 1-oz Silver & Copper Morgan Schoolgirl Dollar 2-pc Set NGC PF70UC https://www.govmint.com/si-2pc-1879...irl-ngc-pf701783 2-oz Silver 13-Sided Nova Constellatio NGC MS70 First Day of Issue w/Smithsonian Label: https://www.govmint.com/1783-13-sid...sonian-label1794-2019 America's First Silver Dollar 1-oz Silver NGC PF70UC - Smithsonian Label https://www.govmint.com/1794-2019-a...-smithsonian2019 Smithsonian Copper Russian Beard Token Antiqued BU https://www.govmint.com/2019-smiths...-antiqued-bu

Thanks! @datadragon thats great information! I had seen some of the private issues and the reproductions and find it interesting that there seem to be a few real Morgans and Peace dollars in the mix. I saw an 1890 that had sold as well. Just not sure how many or what the census is. I grabbed this 78s the other day but initially was unsure about it.

Had not seen these before, but for the most part, my Morgans have been raw purchases. Very cool!

Thanks! @-makecents- I had not either until I ran across this one. I'm glad there are programs in place to assist the Smithsonian with numismatics! I would love to see their collection!

The National Numismatic Collection is currently working to develop digitization initiatives in order to make the national collection more accessible to the public. Some of these pieces are not currently on view by the way elsewhere. https://www.si.edu/spotlight/nation...c-collection
