I got a roll of new nickels from the bank the other day and when I began looking through them I immediately noticed something funky about the diameter: it seemed much smaller than normal, both by sight and by touch.

Indeed, in the 2023 coin show below (on the right), the left-hand rim feels somewhat pitted, and the lower side of the right-hand rim looks to be about half the size of the 2022's rim (on the left).

I'm not sure how much of this comes through in the photograph, but I assure you, it would be very apparent to a seasoned collector in person.

Any comments? Is this a run-of-the-mill variety or something better? Thanks.

can we see an image of the reverse, and a picture (a close up) of the edge in the area of your concern.

Unfortunately, this photo is the best I can do with my iPhone. The reverse doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.

I don't see any significant difference in the rims. The width of the rim can differ around a coin depending on the strike, etc. When you say diameter, do you mean the actual diameter of the coin is different?

Yes, it seems like the actual diameter is different. It jumped out at me immediately. I've been collecting for 50 years, so I think I have a good eye for that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, in addition to not having a better photography setup, I also don't have a tool for measuring diameters.
