Hey folks, just purchased my first U.S. Classic silver dollar after scouring ebay for the last few weeks for something affordable and found one which I am now trying to assess the legitimacy of. Is this coin worth sending for authentication? I'm not an expert, however I have tried photomatching to known fakes and the only odd thing I can see with my untrained eye is potentially a date issue but then that might just be wear: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325648629563

Unfortunately a common current fake... Reverse matches the one used for a whole family of these draped bust fakes; I actually wrote a Coin Week article on these. Also wrong for the date, from a 1799 variety. Hopefully you can get your money back. Seller also has an 1803 with the same reverse... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325633787494

Thanks! Appreciate the swift response - hopefully I get a refund, whether it's the easy way - or the hard way.

you can buy off ebay, you just need to find good sellers and stick with them. But I can see the similarities between the '1800' and the '1803' with the gouges on the reverse. Seeing these help buyers to be more educated on what to look for.

Gag, another 1804. Who on earth thinks they're getting an 1804 dollar raw off ebay? Post the link so we can do our thing.
