Hi! We have inherited an extremely large coin collection from my fiances deceased uncle. I have spent the past month or so going through each coin, logging them, reading books for errors, looking under magnifying glasses for errors, etc. I came across this penny from 1988. I know the Philadelphia mints won't have the mint mark under the date, but I keep seeing what looks like a "P" to the right of his profile at around 3oclock. I can't find anywhere where this could be some kind of minting error. Is it a P or just some kind of normal wear and tear on the coin that resembles it? Thank you so much from a new learner just trying their best ha

I think what you are seeing is a "popped" zinc bubble along with a gouge caused by another coin making it look like a P. There also appears to be a zinc bubble on top of Lincoln's hair. Best to wait until the experts give you an official opinion. Enjoy your search... It sure can be fun.

Ok to help us help you, we need a few minimum image requirements.
Have the coin cropped up to the edges (like you did here - great job on that)
have the coin oriented correctly - up right (top of heat at the top and so on)
take full coin images both front and back - But from directly overhead looking straight down
do your best to reduce glare on the coin - the glare can hide details

Now that said, what I see on your coin as stated could be zinc bubbles that burst open, or
(as I think) it could be contact marks from a reeded coin - such as a quarter. I see this in 2 locations and the marks look the same to me.

Might have been set aside for the reason you noticed, but unfortunately it is just corrosion and damage—no premium.
