I have a 1996 Silver American Eagle that I picked up about 5 years ago. The reverse has a imprinted circle around the eagle that almost looks like it belongs there. It actually is the exact size of a half dollar. Anyone ever seen anything like this? I have searched all over the internet and have had no luck at all.

Quote: exact size of a half dollar That is odd... and the quality of the strike looks amazingly good. Can you tell us where you picked it up?

The strike is really good, probably would grade out as an MS69 compared to a couple of other SAE's graded by PCGS without the additional ring. I bought it at an estate auction and I'm not really sure where since at that time I was attending them at least twice a month.

That is a beautiful ASE. I would to find one like that. I've never seen one with the ring on it like. And I can't imagine how that could be any striking error either. I does indeed look like that is how the die was designed. I am by no means an expert, I would seek the opinion of others before taking my work on anything. But have you considered that this might be a fantasy piece?

The circle flows really nice with the fields, but perhaps another Chinese version? No offense, it's really nice, but... success,

BGEORGE9, Welcome to the forum, this is a very odd looking ASE, having collected them since 86 I have never seen this "ring before, from the photo's the rim on the obverse appears to be wider than the rim on the reverse, or is this just from the picture, either way, a test piece from the mint design dept, a Chinese replica?

It's more likely that the "ring" is part of the aftermarket plastic holder that the coin is housed in. I think the ring would disappear from the coin if the coin were removed from the holder. It is a ridge of plastic that is [part of the holder. It accentuates the look of the coin but is probably not a part of the coin itself.

What ever the ring may be is puzzling. But the coin looks much better to me with it as I am not a big fan of the ASE reverse. When I get one I hardly pay any attention to the back of the coin, I love the walking liberty design though and think that it is one of the most beautiful coin designs ever minted in the world.

I've seen that before on another forum. It turned out the ring was part of the plastic capsule.

As it turns out, the ring is from the plastic capsule. I have never seen a capsule like that so it didn't even cross my mind. I wasnted to preserve the coins integrity so I did not remove it from the capsule until that was suggested. Once removed, no ring, just a extremely beautiful coin. I'm not much for the reverse anyhow, but I really love the Obverse. Thanks for the help!
