I have a 1928 penny that I need to ask questions about. There is nothing that jumps out at me about it, except that the '8' in '1928' is not in one piece.

The 8 has a gap at the bottom of the lower half, is this common?

I got this coin out of bulk coins from bigfella and talk about speed, only took four days :D

Looks common to me.

Maybe wait for the error experts to have a look.

The 1928 penny with "broken bottom of figure 8 in date" is a well-attested variety; it's listed in the new Renniks varieties catalogue as B27A (I think those are Dean numbers) and rated "scarce".

Unfortunately, Ian McConnelly's definition of "scarce" is a bit vague: it's rarer than common, not as rare as "very scarce". I think he used a percentage probability of finding that error on a coin of that date - about 5%-10% would be my guess. Anyone actually know?

I just had to go check 1928 penny, it does not have a gap at the bottom of the 8, but it is only half as thick as the rest of the line. See pic.

Actaully you'll find that most 1928 pennies have a break at the bottom of the '8' to some degree and normally in other places as well. It is quite difficult to find one with a fully formed date.
