This may be common knowledge, but I bet its not. But I know more than one person on here is already going to know this. But I found this incredibly interesting.

I was in the coin shop the other day and there was me, another collecter, and the shop keep, and we were all talking coin. (This particular shop-keep can talk your ear off). We were talking about mint-marks and the shop-keep asked us two what were the first coins to have a 'P' mintmark for philadelphia.

The other collecter answered first saying the 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar, which I thought was a really good guess but I knew it wasn't right. I said the 1943 'P' mint nickel, and to my surprise the shop keep said I was wrong!

I was confused, but he opened up a book and showed me something. Apparently the philadelphia mint minted coins for the netherlands back in the 40's during the war, and the first coins bearing the 'P' mintmark for philadelphia was the circulating 1941 netherlands coinage.

Interesting, huh?

Yeah, I've seen those before. But, I was like you and didn't know until I read an article in Coin World. I think they were silver coins.

I did not know that either but the first US Coin was the 1942 P type 2 nickel which is what you probably meant to say.
I wish I had a friendly coin shop to hang out in and shoot the breeze.
The only one I know of around here is a bit snobbish and cold.
If I were twenty years younger, I'd open up my own.
