I am now looking at each and every ounce of change I get back. I came across this 2017 D dime. Wondering if the damage on back is human made or Machine made?

@chr, those scratches and flattening are damage rather than being a mint error. This coin would be a spender for me.

Just damage, likely deliberate.

Definitely PMD due to the dime being scraped across something abrasive. Note the scratches on the obverse as well.

PMD Agree, there are an infinitesimal amount of way`s that people will damage coins and no lack of imagination.
The best way not to waste your time of such inconsequential things on coins is to research the processes of how Die`s are created and the minting process of the coin its self.
Here is a fantastic place to start.

to the CCF and One thing to remember is when you have a gouge, scratch, or trough with a corresponding buildup of metal, 99.9% of the time it's damage.
